Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost
everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better
marriages and more respectable jobs. Personal advisor give them better advice
for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants, but in the
executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the
executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than
plainer ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such
as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and
to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though,
the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal
relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is
considered to be more womanly and an attractive man more manly than the less
attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally
female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears
to lack the "manly" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks,
people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently
published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She
asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of
men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told what
the photographs were of. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they
would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive
men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the
fewest votes.

If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius
(天才), they will cause great damage to him . According to several leading
educational psychologists (心理学家), this is one of the biggest mistakes that
some parents make . Generally , the child will understand very well what the
parents expect , and will fail . Unrealistic (不现实的) parental expectation can
cause great damage to children .
However , if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their
children to do , but are hopeful in a sensible (有理智的) way , the child may
succeed in doing very well-especially if the parents are very supportive of their
children .
Michael Li is very lucky . He is very fond of music , and his parents help
him a lot by making him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin
lessons for him . They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin
lessons . Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music , his father
plays the trumpet (小号) in a large orchestra (管弦乐队). However , his father
never makes Michael enter (参加) music competition if he is unwilling .
Michael’s friend , Winston Chen , however , is not lucky . Although both
his parents are successful musicians , they set too high a standard (标准) for
Winston . They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter
him in every piano competition held . They are very unhappy when he does not
win . “When I was your age , I used to win every competition I entered .”
Winston’s father tells him . Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his
parents and now he always seem quiet and unhappy .

In 1869 , a special waterway was completed . This new waterway
connected the Mediterranean (地中海) and the Gulf of Suez , which is part of
the Red Sea . This Canal which lies in a desert area in northeastern Egypt , is
called the Suez Canal .
The Suez Canal runs for about 173 kilometers from the port of Suez , on
the Gulf of Suez , to port Said on the Mediterranean Sea . Some parts of the
canal are very narrow , so two ships cannot pass there at the same time . One
ship must wait in a special place or in one of the lakes until the canal is
passable again .
A French engineer , Ferdinand de Lessep , was the director of the
construction of the Suez Canal . The works had been expected to be completed
within 6 years . Because of the bad weather , illness and lack of labour power ,
it actually lasted 4 more years . In honour of the completion of the Suez Canal ,
a famous Italian musician named Giuseppe Verdi wrote a special opera (歌剧) .
This opera , Aida , is one of the most famous operas ever written .
The Suez Canal greatly shortens the ship distance from Asia to western
Europe . But before 1956 , the canal didn’t benefit a lot the people on it , for it
was under the control of an international company . There was an agreement
that declared that the ships of all nations could use the Suez Canal in peacetime
and wartime . However , in 1956 there was a big conftontatio (对抗) among
four countries . The French , British , and Israelites (以色列人) didn’t allow the
Egyptians to exercise sovereignty (主权) to the canal . Then a war broke out
and the canal was closed . With the help of the United Nations , the Egyptians
achieved the aim , and the Suez Canal was reopened the next year .
