Fabien Cousteau is a famous sea explorer(探险家). He plans to
build an underwater international space station.
The new underwater research station is called “Proteus”. It has
an area of about 372 square metres. And it can hold up to 12 people at
a time.
Seas cover(覆盖) more than 70% of the earth, but people still can’t explore them well.
Scientists make maps of less than 20% of the world’s seas, and they only explore 5% of the seas.
Mr Cousteau says that they won’t just use the research station to study and help protect the
sea. They will also use it to find new ways of making energy and even look for new medicines(药
物). Proteus will also have the first underwater greenhouse in the world. It will be used to grow
some food.
They will build Proteus under the surface(表面) of the Caribbean Sea. It will be the world’s
