Kathy took his order, and yelled,“Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said,“A smile costs nothing.” Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away. She brought his order, cleared his plates and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip. Each time the old man saw her,he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier. A week went by,and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say,“A smile costs nothing.” But a week later,Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “I SMILE...$20” at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see. He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added,“...and a smile,if you don’t mind.” Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud.“Now,now...” The man jokingly scolded,“I ordered a smile, not a laugh.” So Kathy put on a bright smile and said,“Coming right up,sir.” And to her surprise,he left a $20 tip! A few years went by,and the two bonded like family.Charlie, the kind old man,was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago.He spent most of his time at home, with exception of his frequent restaurant visits.Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him. Paragraph 1: One day he didn’t come to the restaurant. Paragraph 2: Several days after the funeral,Kathy received a very importantlooking letter in the mail. 参考范文 One day he didn’t come to the restaurant.Kathy called his home, only to hear an answering machine. With nervousness wrapped into anxiety, she went to his house and found out from his neighbor that he had died the day before. On hearing the bad news she felt seized by a burst of sadness and couldn’t help crying bitterly.Because Charlie had no family or close friends,Kathy put herself in charge of his funeral arrangements. She and the neighbor were the only people to attend. Several days after the funeral,Kathy received a very importantlooking letter in the mail.It was from Charlie’s lawyer. In it was a check for almost $600,000!Kathy nearly fainted, but then she noticed a handwritten note which read:“Dear Kathy,by the time you read this,I will be gone. Here I have left for my best friend a small token of my gratitude I can never repay you for what you have given me,for you see,Kathy,a smile is worth much more than $20.Indeed,a smile is priceless.” 版块二---读后续写精彩词句集锦 板块三--练一练 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续 写的词数应为 150 左右。 “Before you leave the bus, please make sure you have your buddy!” Mrs Brown announced. To make sure no one got lost in the zoo, each student had a buddy(companion/friend).Mary’s buddy was named John.John loves animals and likes to go to the zoo.But sometimes,John does not follow the rules and gets in trouble.Mary hoped that today,John would follow the rules so they would not get in trouble. When the rest of the students got off the bus,Mary and John quickly ran off to explore. They found the exhibits for many different kinds of animals and learned a lot about their natural habitats. They saw the elephants playing and they saw giraffes eating. They saw the polar bears sleeping and the monkeys leaping.Mary asked John: “John, what is your favorite animal?” “I think I like chimpanzees best. They have a lot of energy, just like me! What animal do you like,Mary?” “I love polar bears! I think their lifestyle in the Arctic is very interesting.” A few hours later,Mary and John started to feel hungry. They made their way back to the zoo entrance to eat lunch at the Rainforest Café.The Rainforest Café is both Mary and John’s favorite restaurant because there is an aquarium inside. The restaurant is also famous for its chocolate cake,in which Mary ordered for dessert after they had finished their lunch. As Mary was finishing her cake , John excused himself to go to the restroom.About ten minutes later,an alarm suddenly began to go off and a voice came over the loudspeaker: “Attention! Someone has opened the chimpanzee exhibit! Some chimpanzees have escaped!” People were screaming and starting to run.Mary looked for John, but he was nowhere to be found. Oh no! Mary was sure she knew where John had gone. As Mary raced up the path to the animal exhibits, she stopped because she saw John with two chimpanzees held in his arms.He offered a small , guilty smile.“I didn’t mean to let them escape,” he said.“I just wanted to set them free so that they could play outside for a little while!” he continued with excitement.“I took the key from a zookeeper who wasn’t looking.
