When our children were young, we started our own Christmas tree tradition — cutting down our very own real
Christmas tree at the local Christmas tree farm and pulling it back using our truck.
Although we always considered our tree perfect, we knew we had to leave the most perfect and beautiful tree
behind in the forest on the tree farm. The farm was owned by Bob and Lois, who also owned a roadside grocery
store just four blocks from where we lived. Every year, at the beginning of the holiday season, Lois would walk
through her forest of trees and find the perfect tree for her family. She would tie a strip of red plastic to signal that it
was her family tree. All other trees available for others to cut would have an orange tie strip.
As Christmas approached one year, getting a tree was the furthest thing from our minds. It had not been a good year.
In the summer, I had an injury. Then in November, I developed terrible mumps ( 腮 腺 炎 )! On the eve of
Thanksgiving, my disease worsened. I was given treatment in the hospital. After a week, I was allowed to go home.
Then, I discovered I was pregnant with our fourth child. Although the pregnancy turned out fine, I lived in terror of
what the mumps might have done to the fetus (胎儿).
With this illness and terror, the holiday season was fast approaching. We were not able to go to the tree farm for our
annual Christmas tree hunt, because I was still easy to be tired from being ill. It was a pity for us all. Bob and Lois
were very concerned about all that had happened to our family during that year. They were son-y that I didn’t feel
up to coming out for our annual Christmas tree hunt.
One rainy evening when my husband drove his truck and returned home from Bob and Lois’ grocery store, the
children noticed him at the window.

At the age of eighteen, I possessed something every teenager dreams of — a driver’s license. But like some kids of
my age, I didn’t take driving seriously and I wasn’t very skilled at it.
“Mom, can I drive home?” I asked Mom when she picked me up from my after-school house-cleaning job. She
hesitated before replying, “Maybe you can have a try since you have got your driver’s license.” I jumped into the
driver’s seat. Mom guided me while I was driving the car in Mrs. Carlson’s driveway. When we reached the
countrysie road, I stopped. “Now, look both ways,” Mom instructed. “Turn your steering wheel (方向盘) to the left.
Give the car some gas, but drive slowly and carefully. We’re not in any hurry.”
I pulled onto the narrow two-lane road. We rolled along fine until a blue truck rushed behind us. I glanced at our
car’s mirror, finding that the trucks driver drove very fast and seemed to be in a hurry. When I failed to speed up, he
impatiently sounded his horn (喇叭). I felt a little scared and anxious, with my .fingers taking hold of the steering
wheel. Mom pointed, “You’d better turn into the next driveway and let this guy pass.”
Before I reached the place where I needed to turn, the guy sounded his horn again. In a panic, I drove too last
without listening to Mom’s instruction. As a result, our car turned right and drove off the road. The car’s engine
screamed like an angry cow. And it immediately flew through a wire fence and luckily stopped in the middle of a
pasture (牧场), where several horses were eating grass.
My hands dropped from the steering wheel. For a moment, my mom and I sat silently. I took several deep breaths,
afraid to look at my mom. Finally, she asked, “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I’m all right,” I said and turned to face her. I
thought that she would criticize me, but when our eyes met, we burst into laughter.

the wire fence to observe the strange happening. Their funny expressions brought us more laughter. “Are you ladies
okay?” a man’s
voice interrupted. We spotted the blue truck parked in the driveway and an older man walking towards us. Mom
quickly calmed herself and replied, “Yeah.” And she added this was the first time that I had driven on the road. The
man apologized for having sounded his horn.

Then the truck driver checked our car over and didn’t see any damage. However, the tires had been stuck into the
soft ground. Since the man was busy and our car wasn’t damaged, Mom let him drive off. Then we knocked on the
door of the farm owner, but there was no answer. Mom wrote a note with our name and phone number on it,
explaining that we’d be back to claim the car and repair the fence. It was an unforgettable driving experience for
me. From then on, I began to take driving seriously and learned to drive carefully.

One day, I arrived home from school feeling overheated, exhausted, and angry with my brothers for being kicked
out of the car and walking home alone. Taking a few steps inside, I dropped my books and realized the house was a
little too quiet. Looking around, my anger turned to weariness, and suddenly I felt a fierce stream of water glide (滑
动) across my shirt. Before I realized what happened, another blasted me directly in the face. I dove behind the
couch as I heard my brothers yell, “Water fight!”
Running to the other side of the room where my own water gun was hidden beneath a loose floorboard, loaded and
ready to go, I grabbed it and congratulated myself on being prepared in advance.
Instantly, my anger with my brothers disappeared, and I eagerly joined in the water spraying. We didn’t stop until
we were nearly wet all over and ou of water. Calling a truce (休战), we decided to team up and take on a larger,
more dangerous enemy. While taking turns reloading our weaponry, we hatched our plan.
Our mother was outside watering the garden, totally unaware of the danger approaching her from behind. We
silently counted to three and began showering her with water. She turned around and stood still as we finished the
last of our supply. Only when she thought our guns were empty did she dare to speak a word. However, when she
began to lecture us, a stray drop shot from my gun, landing smack dab in her right eye, and she lost her temper.
We ran to the living room with our mother close behind and barely reached the door in time to shut her out. She
began pounding on it and shouting at us to let her in, but we had no idea that this was all an act. She actually had
her own plan.

decided to keep the trick going. We would take turns slightly opening the door, spraying her, and then quickly
shutting and relocking it. Every time, she would play the angry mother role, but inside she was calmly waiting for
an opening. Our confidence grew as we successfully sprayed her. We would leave the door open for longer periods
each time, laughing at her.

the door and sprayed us and the entire living room. Under the strong water, my brothers and I were too shocked to

students would pass by and make unfriendly comments on him. He would just frown (皱眉) and look down at the
floor. I wanted to be kind to him but. still I couldn’t take the first step.
When I got home, I talked to my sister about Jose. I told her about him being new here and about how the students
at school treated him. Then I told her that I wanted to talk to him but I was worried that my friends would make fun
of me. She said with a smile, “If they are your true friends, they will stick by you no matter what you do. You know,
those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” The next day, I knew exactly what I was going to
do.

Garish never forgot the tricky string of letters that added up to the last name of his kindergarten classmate,

night in 2010 while serving in Iraq. He found her still living in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. So he sent a friend
request on Facebook.
Stipkovits had no idea who he was. She was Jialf a world away, a single mother raising her six-year-old daughter,
Maleena. But her mother did recall a James Garish.
Garish had only six months left in his three years of active duty when he friended Stipkovits on Facebook. Her calls
brought relief from his high-risk job as a defender for bomb disposal (拆弹) specialists. Stipkovits knew how he
felt, far away from friends and family. Her dad was a retired chief in the navy and once served in Kuwait.
Stipkovits was delighted to be his listener. When Garish excitedly bought a plane ticket home for Christmas in 2010,
she was even more delighted by the surprise of seeing him in the yard of her house.
Unmarried and without children, Garish had shown a tendency to care for people in need, needless to say the ones
he loved. Actually, before he and Stipkovits reunited in 2010, he'd donated much of his first army paycheck, around
$600, to Jamie’s Dream Team, a local charity. The money helped a six-year-old boy suffering from the genetic
disorder syndrome (综合症) go on a long-wished-for camping trip.
By the following summer, Garish had completed his service and moved back to McKeesport. He often visited
Stipkovits and spent time playing games with Maleena while Stipkovits worked as a medical secretary. The
relationship that started from that friend request bound Garish and Stipkovits together.

Dream Team appealed to more than a dozen organizations to donate things, such as flowers and a wedding cake.
Finally, Garish and Stipkovits got married before 200 guests at a church. The couple held each other firmly, their
eyes filling with tears.
