1 / 2 Unit2 Word power Teaching Content Advance with English, Module 8, Unit 2, Word Power “Parts of an orchestra”. Teaching Aims After learning Word Power, the students are expected to: 1 . pronounce the new words correctly and understand the meanings with the help of the pictures. 2.know more about orchestra, especially the symphony orchestra. 3.develop more interest in symphony by appreciating one piece of master. 4.know the elements for a successful orchestra performance and act properly when watching an orchestra performance. Teaching Important and Difficult Points 1 . Pronounce the new words correctly and understand the meanings with the help of the pictures. 2.Learn more about the symphony orchestra, especially how to appreciate a symphony. Teaching procedures Step 1 Warming- up & lead- in 1 . Teacher plays several pieces of music and asks the students to tell the different musical instruments. 2.Teacher motivates the students to think about the theme of each piece of music, and present the statement “Music is a universal language.” 3.Teacher introduces four great musicians—— Bach, Haydon, Beethoven and Mozart, and then lead in the topic “Parts of an orchestra”. Step2 Presentation of the new words and expressions 1.Students are asked to read the passage about orchestra, and find answers to the following questions: 1) What is an orchestra? 2) Are there different types of orchestras? What are they? 2 / 2 3) What music is performed in an orchestra? 2.Teacher shows students the pictures of different musical instruments played in an orchestra, and help students to correct the pronunciations. Step 3 Practice of the new words and expressions 1.Students take part in “Quick Response” activity to understand the meaning of the words better, with the help of the pictures. 2.Students classify the musical instruments into different groups: strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. 3.Students finish the exercise and give a feedback activity. 4.Students discuss the orchestra seating plan and put the pictures in the correct place. Step 4: Production—Appreciation of a symphony 1.Students watch a piece of VCR of a symphony and speak out loud the names of the musical instruments. 2.Teacher introduces the symphony and asks students to enjoy it again. 3.Teacher motivates the students to think about two questions: (1) What the elements for a successful orchestra performance? (2) What should the audience do before or during or after an orchestra performance? Step 5 Homework 1.Try to add more words to each of the categories in Part B. 2.Get more information about orchestra, and try to watch one more symphony. 查看更多
