I had moved to Japan for a long- term client consulting engagement. After a few days in a Tokyo
hotel I moved to an apartment. After being moved in by my colleagues, it was time to get dinner. I
found a pizza deliver flyer in my mailbox, and decided to simply order a pizza as. I might have the
previous week in Manhattan. The phone call to Cali Pizza was easier than anticipated and while
waiting for the pizza I set about unpacking.
Unfortunately, after 45 minutes no pizza. I figured that my “easy” call really wasn’t and that I
would need to make alternate plans for dinner. While thinking about what to do next, my phone rang. It
was Cali Pizza calling to say that they could not find my apartment based on the address that I had
given them. Once it was determined that I had provided an incorrect address, the clerk on the phone
asked me to describe what I could see from my window. After some back and forth they seemed
satisfied that they knew where I was.
A few minutes later the pizza arrived, This is when my “customer delight” experience took over.
First, the delivery person apologized repeatedly for being late, then he showed me the small blue metal
plate on my building with the correct address, and finally he refused to accept payment for the pizza
because he was late. Net result: one delighted customer (me), and frequent orders from Cali Pizza
during my two-year stay in Japan.
Such “customer delight” experiences become stories I have used to illustrate what it means to
truly delight a customer.
4. What did the writer do first after he moved in the apartment?
A. Deliver flyers. B. Place an order.
C. Call his colleagues. D. Set about unpacking.
5. why was the delivery delayed?

B. The clerk was unfamiliar with the address.
C. The wrier provided an inaccurate address.
D. The pizza was sent to a wrong address.
6. Which of the following best explains “took over” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Disappeared. B. Dominated. C. Promoted. D. Decreased.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. It’s never easy to settle down in a new city.
B. A delayed delivery may result in good profit.
C. One can’t be too careful when placing an order.
D. A short-term loss of benefit may reward a lot.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. D

Long before they found their way into living rooms around the world, computers were the
belongings of institutes and corporate headquarters. After all, the huge and heavy mainframes of the
1960s might easily fill a room of their own.
The invention of the microprocessor-Intel’s 4004 was the first to be made commercially available
in 1971-changed all that. Manufacturers were finally able to produce machines small enough to fit into
customers’ homes. Yet, the question was: Could firms persuade people to actually want one there?
The story of how computers enter our homes is not one of technology but one of marketing and
design, according to writer and journalist Alex Wiltshire, whose new book, Home Computers: 100
Icons that Defined a Digital Generation, tells the industry’s early history through its most influential
models. “The technology was already in existence,” he said in a phone interview. “But what was
important was the idea of putting it into a form that could be bought and easily used.”
The very first models in Wilshire’s book were aimed at hobbyists and industry insiders. These
so-called “kit” computers performed only basic functions. But the arrival of user-friendly machines
like the CPET 2001 and Apple Ⅱ in 1977 were signs of a turning point.
“There was a massive change around the idea of ‘What if these computers were packaged,
presented and designed in a form that anyone could use?’-that they wouldn’t require people to learn
computer languages, or to devote several rooms of their houses,” Wiltshire said. “What if there were
these objects that people could buy off the shelf and just plug into their TVs? That was the moment
that the idea of a ‘home computer’ was born, and it was absolutely down to design.”
8. What can we learn from Alex’s book?
A. Technology for home computers was not mature.
B. Marketing and design counted most for computers.
C. The home computer industry has a long history.
D. The writer’s idea was put in the design of home computers
9. What is the difference between kit computers and CPET 2001?
A. Kit computers could handle complex operation.
B. Kit computers were more environmently friendly.
C. CPET 2001 was easier to use for common people.
D. CPET 2001 was better than Apple I.
10. What is the topping idea when designing a “home computer”?
A. Designing it like a TV.
B. Designing it aimed at housewives.
C. Designing it easier to use and keep.
D. Designing it used learning languages.
11. What’s Alex’s attitude towards the change of home computer?
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Suspicious.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. A
D
In a country where over 80% of residents live in public housing, a government commitment to
sustainable urban design could have huge influence. And when it’ s a tropical country like Singapore
where convenience and air conditioning are a way of life, the impact could be greater still.
Promising 42,000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the
24th new settlement built by Singapore’ s government since World War Ⅱ. It is, however, the first with
centralized cooling, automated trash collection and a car-free town center, with which environment
lovers hope to offer a roadmap for reducing carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian city-state.
The development is named as “Forest Town” by officials, due to its abundant greenery and public
gardens. Once home to brickmaking factories , and later used for military training, the 2.7-square-mile
site has been reclaimed by a forest in recent years. A 328-foot-wide ecological “corridor” will be
maintained through its center, providing safe passage to wildlife and connecting a water catchment
area on one side to a nature reserve on the other.
The project has proven a new plan for urban planners supporting green design principles and
“smart” technology, according to Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at
Singapore’s Housing and Development Board, the agency overseeing the country’ s public housing.
“Tengah is a new start,” he said in a video interview, explaining that roads and parking are being
pushed beneath the town center. “We’re going for the ideal concept of separated traffic, with
everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for pedestrians-for people. So, it’s a
very safe environment for all.”
“We want a town that allows walking and cycling in a very user-friendly manner,” he added,
saying that cycling has “taken off” in Singapore in the “last three to five years especially”. The master
plan will see the installation (安装) of electric vehicle charging stations.
12. What is special about the 24h new settlement?
A. It can house 42,000 people. B. It will be well equipped.
C. It will be built by the government. D. It will be environmentally friendly.
13. Which of the following might be the design of the forest town.
A.
B. .
C. .
D. .
14. What can we learn from Chong Fook Loong’s words?
A. A parking lot will put in the town center.
B. Separated traffic will be applied.
C. Bikes will be able to fly in the near future.
D. All masters will install charging stations.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ways to reduce carbon emissions
B. A green roadmap for Singapore
C. Eco’ smart’ city of Singapore
D. A smart electric vehicle technology
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

A books-for-food program in Guatemala is helping feed needy children as hunger rates rise during
the pandemic(疫情). It is run by a local nonprofit organization that aims to feed nearly 400 children.
The program is simple. People choose a book they want from a list of donated titles, and in return
give bags of Incaparina, a high-protein drink mix. Bonifaz Diaz works for the program. By bringing
the books-for-food program directly to people's homes, Diaz makes sure donations keep flowing. He
has traveled more than 2,000 kilometers on his bicycle, delivered loads of books and carried back
thousands of kilograms of Incaparina for the nonprofit group 32 Volcanoes. Diaz sometimes pulls a
small cart that helps him carry up to 57 kilograms of product. He has traveled as far as 60 kilometers
for a delivery to a town in the Western Highlands, where road conditions are poor.
Nearly a year into the books-for-food program, two more cyclists have joined Diaz and donations
keep flowing in. Ana Castillo is a 29-year-old high school teacher who recently received the sociology
book from Diaz. She donates to the program often. The 1.8 kilograms of Incaparina she provided will
help one family eat for a month.
Castillo looks forward to choosing her books from the titles Diaz posts on social media. She also
loves the feeling of a "growing circle" of giving and receiving. "You might not get to those places, but
your help can. "she says.
Diaz says he plans to continue cycling against hunger as long as the need exists. He has faced his
own economic difficulties since the theater company he co-founded closed last spring. But the program
has kept him active. "It's an opportunity to serve in which we all benefit. "Diaz said.

Several years ago, when someone used camera covers to protect against possible monitoring, it
was not popular to talk about it. Today, people use various types of tapes to cover the web cameras and
microphones.
There are many types of spyware that can dive into our devices and secretly spy on them,
recording everything they do. Such programs may infect not only computers but also smartphones.
Your data may be used by hackers who will try to request money for not exposing your private
information or by companies like NSO Group who created the Pegasus spyware to “provide authorized
governments with technology that helps struggle against terror and crime”.
In my opinion, the described protection technique is highly overestimated. Users tape cameras
and microphones due to the lack of understanding of how their devices work and how malware(恶意软
件)works. Hackers and even secret services do not have enough resources to monitor all victims using
cameras or microphones. If they need to yet any information, they get it by sending a targeted malware
to your device, which will not be stopped by the tapes. Such a virus will find what
to steal -from personal photos and videos to passwords from social networks, browser history, bank
accounts and much more.
It is unwise to believe that attackers will not be able to find a way to spy on you, even if the
device, discharged to zero, can still deliver data about your location, using the smartphones of the
surrounding people as signal repeaters. Let us face it. we live in an era when it is extremely difficult to
hide something and a piece of tape is clearly not the most useful tool in the struggle for your privacy.
Again, to be able to spy on you, attackers need to plant malware in your device. To prevent
malware from entering your device, do not click suspected links and email attachments. Use strong
passwords for email, social media and online banking accounts.
8. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Cameras.
B. Types.
C. Programs.
D. Devices.
9. What is NSO Group?
A. group of hackers.
B. A company developing spyware.
C. A group of terrorists and criminals.
D. A company fighting against crime.
10. Why does the author think "the protection technique is highly overestimated”?
A. People know little about their devices.
B. Hackers have no access to others.
C. It hardly prevents malware from getting privacy.
D. It can't cover the cameras completely.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Protecting privacy on devices.
B. Rising trend of using tapes.
C. Monitoring devices via cameras.
D. Avoiding clicking distrustful links.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. A

Hidden beneath the surface in the roots of Earths astonishing and diverse plant life, there exists a
biological superhighway linking together the members of the plant kingdom in what researchers call
the "wood wide web".
The network is comprised of thin threads of fungus (真菌) that grow outwards underground up to
a few meters from its partnering plant, meaning that all of the plant life within a region likely
connected to one another. The partnership is beneficial for both parties involved, plants provide
carbohydrates (碳水化合物) to the funguses and in exchange, the funguses aid in gathering water and
providing nutrients to its partnering plant.
A study conducted by Rensen Zeng of the South China Agricultural University found that this
also allowed for plants to warn one another of potential harm. The study showed Broad Beans used the
fungal network to spy on one another for upcoming danger.
Like our Internet, this fungal connectivity is also full of crime. Some plants, such as Golden
Marigolds have been found to release poisons into the network to slow down the growth of
surrounding plants in the fight for water and light. Other plants, such as the Phantom Orchid, do not
have the chlorophyll (叶绿素) and must get the necessary nutrients from surrounding plants.
Research suggests that animals such as insects and worms may be able to detect slight exchanges
of nutrients through the network, allowing them to more easily find delicious roots to feed on; however,
this has not been conclusively made clear in experimentation. The more we learn about this
phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change.
Perhaps one day, we may be able to map out these complex networks entirely.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain the aim of the web.
B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To give definition of diverse life.
D. To show the importance of plants.
13. The criminal behavior of plants can be seen as a way to________.
A. compete for survival
B. gather more water
C. take in sunlight
D. break natural rules
14. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. Animals can also feed on the fungus.
B. Nutrient exchanges are too slight to detect.
C. No experiment can prove the phenomenon.
D. More needs to be done to work out the network.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. The Partnership between Plants
B. The Unknown Roots of the Earth
C. The Superhighway Linking the Plants
D. The Mysterious Map Changing the World
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

Looking for a place to take a rest, sip a cup of coffee and have a furry companion? Welcome to
animal-themed cafes.
In recent years, the combination of pets and catering has become incredibly popular in many cities
throughout China. While many cafes started out offering the company of cats and dogs, others are
expanding their range. Some cafes include animals like squirrels, raccoons and even capybaras.
In reviews, internet users have commented that their main reason for visiting these businesses is
to interact closely with animals they have only seen from afar.
“The customers love animals. They are curious about these pets and want to raise one at home,
but circumstances don’t allow it,”said pet cafe owner Tian Rui,Liu Jing,a Beijing resident who works
in finance, loves pigs, but her parents would not endorse her getting one as a pet.The 24-year-old had
to admire the animals through videos and images. But now,she can have close contact with an
adorable pig every weekend in a pet cafe.
Also, these pet cafes serve as a shelter for those who find comfort in being around animals.“In
this place, you can get close to the cute little ones in a very comfortable way without having to worry
about safety and hygiene(卫生)—overall,it is an extremely comfortable experience,”said Zhao Ming
from Tianjin,30,a frequent pet cafe visitor.
Animal lovers also expect the pet cafes to change people’s attitudes toward pets.Animals like
ducks, pigs and sheep have been served as food for many years.People hardly see them as pets. But
the pet cafes help shift their attitude from seeing them as playthings to regarding them as family
members or close friends.

Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of
touch. They hope their invention will give people with prosthetic hands(假肢)the ability to identify
different objects.
The skin device measures 1 square centimeter. The system contains 100 small sensors that
attempt to recreate things like texture(质地),temperature and even pain. The researchers call the
device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin(ACES),which can process information faster than the
human’s nervous system.Machine learning methods trained the device to recognize 20 to 30 different
textures. It can even correctly read Braille letters(布莱叶盲文)most of the time.
The system does not require the users’movement to work. They just need to slide to feel
texture. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch,is able to detect textures of different
roughness.
A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between a soft ball and a
solid plastic one.“When you lose your sense of touch, you essentially become numb and prosthetic
users face that problem,”said Benjamin Tee,leader of the research team.“So by recreating an artificial
version of the skin for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that it
is soft.”
Tee said his idea for the device came from the movie Star Wars, when character Luke Skywalker
loses his right hand and it is replaced with a robotic one.In the film, the new hand is able to experience
touch sensations just like the real one.
The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said
there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community.Tee said
similar inventions that his team has developed include see-through skin that can repair itself when torn
and a material for wearable electronic devices that gives off light.
12.What can we learn about the artificial skin in Paragraph 2?
A.It is sensitive to high temperature. B.It reacts faster than our nervous system.
C.It can recognize different objects. D.It helps the users memorize Braille letters.
13.What can be inferred from Benjamin Tee’s words?
A.The artificial skin feels like a real thing .
B.People with the artificial skin feel warm.
C.People don’t want to lose the sense of touch.
D.He is sympathetic towards the prosthetic users.
14.What inspired Benjamin Tee to create the artificial skin?
A.The desire to help those in need. B.The life of the disabled.
C.A dream of earning more money. D.A scene from a famous movie.
15.Which word can best describe the artificial skin technology?
A.Profitable. B.Stable. C.Promising. D.Challenging.

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 20th annual Roger Ebert's Film Festival, a special event in
partnership with the University of Illinois College of Media, the greater Champaign-Urbana
community, and movie lovers everywhere. Little did we think, back in 1999, that our experiment in
reinventing the film festival — to make a festival that celebrated overlooked films and the women and
men who made those films — would become a landmark annual event in the life of our community
and contribute to the repairs of the remarkable Virginia Theater.
In selecting the films for this year, Chaz Ebert and I looked to women filmmakers for our
inspiration. Fully half of our films are either directed or co-directed by women, and several others have
women in powerful producing roles. Films directed or co-directed by women include 13th , directed by
Ava DuVernay9 Belle, directed by Amma Asante, and American Splendor, directed by Shari Springer
Berman and Robert Pulcini. And women producers include Lynda Obst and Emma Thomas winter
stellar^ and Ruth Ann Harnisch and Danielle Renfrew Behrens (Columbus).
Our opening night film is The Fugitive, directed by Andrew Davis, a graduate from University of
Illinois. Our Saturday night film is the classic The Big Lebozvski. Our guest will be the Hollywood
master Jeff Dowd. And of course The Alloy Orchestra will be back, this year with A Page of Madness,
the classic Japanese silent film.
We would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers, festival pass holders, and individual ticket

During a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in “visitors”
recently. So many are the hermit crabs (寄居蟹)flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh
Lanta that shells (贝壳)for them to live in have become in short supply.
The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage, launching a public appeal for
empty shells that netted over 200 kg. On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a
ceremony.
Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies, moving to larger shells as they grow. On
Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon,
rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells may be man-made :
pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods. Crabs had begun to make do with potential
death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles.
The shell drive was part of a government initiative to “regain the balance of nature”. “I have
instructed all national parks to do whatever it takes,” says Varawut Silpa-archa, the minister for natural
resources. His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by CO VID-19. A ban on
international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover, bringing endangered
leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches. In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles
have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years.
The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by CO VID-19 in future.
From now on, all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off-season and to
limit the number of tourists through a reservation system
when they are open. Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term,
in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.

A. They got flooded by seawater.
B. They became completely empty.
C. They were packed with hermit crabs.
D. They saw a constant stream of tourists.
9. What contributed to the housing shortage for hermit crabs?
A. Natural disasters.
B. Human activities.
C. Their preference for bottles.

10. Why are turtles mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To warn turtles are dying out.
B. To prove beaches are their ideal habitats.
C. To stress ecological diversity of Thailand.
D. To illustrate the birth of Varawut’s inspiration.
11, Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Developing Economy or Protecting Animals?
B. Closing National Parks or Drawing More Visitors?
C. Governments are Responsible for the Balance of Nature
D. Authorities Help to Find Shelters for Homeless Hermit Crabs

If Mars were the popular kid in school, Venus (金星)would be the unwelcome one sitting in the
corner, largely ignored. Venus has nearly the same mass and size as Earth, but being closer to the sun,
it gets nearly twice as much heat from the sun.
However, instead of having a climate that is just a warmer version of Earth’s, Venus's surface and
atmosphere are unbearable: clouds of sulphuric acid blanket the planet, while at ground level, it is hot
enough to melt lead. Despite this, there is now a sign that Venus may harbour life.
Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues recently detected phosphine (磷化
氢)in Venus's atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is
because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in laboratories or by microbes(微生物).Though this
doesn't mean it was produced by life on Venus, attempts to find non — biological explanations
for its presence have so far failed.
Our best way of confirming or rejecting the possibility of life on Venus is to go and have a proper
look. While Mars has been the focus of interplanetary exploration efforts lately, the phosphine
discovery lets people look at Venus in a new light. As NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted:
"It's time to prioritize Venus.”
In the months and years to come, computer simulations will be used to further study the possible
chemistries of the atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory experiments will be conducted to try to
identify other ways the phosphine there could be produced. However, there is no guarantee that these
efforts will reveal the true nature of this substance on Venus. A newly-proposed strategy is to directly
sample the atmosphere and surface of Venus. By doing so, we would be able to take direct
measurements of phosphine.
The discovery of phosphine in Venus's atmosphere is a great accomplishment. The scientific
efforts may be just what we need to finally refocus on this neglected world. Possibly, the quiet kid in
the corner may get the last laugh.
12. In theory, what's Venus expected to be like?
A. It is almost as large as Earth.
B. It has nearly the same mass as Earth.
C. It has a warmer Earth-like climate.
D. It has the unbearable surface and atmosphere.
13. What can the discovery of phosphine on Venus indicate?
A. There might exist signs of life.
B. This kind of gas is very common.
C. Many products can be made with it.
D. Experiments were once conducted there.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The importance of observations.
B. The power of computer simulations.
C. The approaches to exploring phosphine.
D. The necessity to analyse phosphine.
15. Which can best describe the author's attitude to the exploration of Venus?
A. Casual. B. Supportive. C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.

Charvi Goyal is a high school student from Dallas, Texas, who helps out other classmates by
tutoring them between classes. A tutor is someone who teaches one person or a very small group of
students.
When Goyal's high school moved online last spring because of COVID-19, she decided to also
take her teaching online. The 17-year-old junior and three of her fellow students created TutorScope, a
program that offers free tutoring services to other children, including younger ones. It started with a
small number of tutors who helped young people in their city. But it has grown into a group of 22
tutors from Texas, Arizona and Ohio. They have helped more than 300 students, some from as far
away as South Korea.
TutorScope aims to give the one-on-one help that teachers have traditionally given while walking
around their classrooms. But now, many teachers cannot provide that one-on-one support because they
lack time or have issues with technology.
Sarah Newman said her children, 7-year-old twins, have had helpful TutorScope experiences. The
service has freed up her and her 17-year-old son in pay attention to their work. "With these tutors, I
realize they have time,“ she said, “I think they are very patient with these younger kids, which I do
not even have as a mother. I have patience in other things, but I don't have patience for teaching.
What makes the TutorScope effort special is the connection between the teenage volunteers and
the other students they are helping. Although the pandemic(疫情)has forced many students to look
inward, Goyal said that working with others on a big project has permitted her to look outward. "My
confidence level has increased," Goyal said. She added that she has made friends with other students
from her school. She said one of the best things about running a growing non-profit is that it does help
with the boredom of being stuck at home. 4. What did Goyal do last spring?

technique. His young grandson's favorites include a walking Peppa Pig and a bubble blowing machine.
Attracting over 1. 17 million fans on YouTube, Grandpa Amu's videos so far have gained more than
200 million views.
His wonderful woodworking skills, using .the same mortise and tenon joints found in the
Forbidden City, were developed from the age of thirteen as a way of supporting his family in East

If businesses are to get workers back into the office, finding ways to keep social distancing(社会
隔 离 ) will be important. An Israeli company thinks it can help, using smart sensors installed on
workplace ceilings.
PointGrab developed its technology before COVID-19 to help workspace managers optimize(优
化)how employees use office space. About the size of a smoke alarm, the sensors can record the exact
number and location of people in buildings including offices, hotels and restaurants. One of the
company's first clients was Deloitte, which installed the system at its London office last year.
PointGrab s sensors were connected to screens in the building to show the availability(利用率)of
desks and shared areas in real time. PointGrab CEO Doron Shachar says it was one of a series of
innovations that helped Deloitte fit 30% more people into 3% less space.
Now to prevent the coronavirus spreading face to face, PointGrab has adapted the technology to
some degree9 so the sensors can also monitor social distancing by keeping track of how far apart
people are, and whether they're traveling in one direction around a building. Workspace managers can
set up alarm for when two people are closer than two meters for more than 30 seconds, for example.
The sensors have been included in the “six feet office“ concept created by a company Cushman &
Wakefield to encourage employees to practice social distancing. They are currently being used in this
way at a university in the Netherlands, and at an innovation centre in Belgium. While the social
distancing innovation is new, PointGrab has installed more than 10, 000 sensors for workspace
optimization, including in the offices of Coca-Cola, Facebook and Dell.
Workers might not like the idea of being monitored, but PointGrab says no images or identifying
features are recorded. Instead', each employee is represented as a dot on a screen. " The sensor does not
violate people's privacy," Shachar says. "This is extremely important in the workspace.
12. What were the sensors used to do before COVID-19?
A. To identify employees. B. To recordlocations.
C. To keep trackof employees. D. To make betteruse of office space.
13. What does the underlined word "adapted” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Introduced. B. Adjusted.
C. Formed. D. Boomed.
