Many people believe small talk is very boring. Although that is true to a certain extent, there are many circumstances where small talk is very important. In the Western culture, strangers talk to other strangers frequently. However, small talk is not so common in the Eastern culture. It is very important to master small talk skills when learning English. Another situation where small talk is important is an interview. That is why this lesson is important to learn. The best way to learn it is to provide many examples. So this lesson will tell you how to use examples. Small talk contains many different topics. We will have several lessons on small talk as soon as we have covered some subjects such as sports, jobs, schools, etc. For now, we will go through the basics of small talk. To start small talk, we can use what we have learned from previous lessons. Once you have started, it's your responsibility to keep the conversation going. In order to do so, you shouldn't talk about anything that is too personal.
第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I am afraid of heights but two summers ago I climbed to a high place. Most of our high school students had come along on a day trip to a beautiful beach village in Peru. After eating our lunches, many of us wanted to make the climb to an area around the village.
Do I turn back?“Yes!” Will I regret (后悔) it later? I really want to get to the top, but ... At last, I decided at least to have a try.
My friend Tom was in front of me. Then, suddenly, he slipped (滑倒) and was about 10 feet back! My heart was beating faster until he stopped himself. Knowing that my friend Seth would be right behind me, I began the climb. I was soon past the first challenge safely, but not feeling much better about the rest of the climb. Looking down, I saw rocks everywhere. My breathing sped up, and my heart beat even faster, growing loud in my ears.
My friends kept climbing. But they did not forget me. Someone was always behind me to help hold my feet when necessary, and someone else was always in front to offer a hand up. With friends helping me by words and actions, I slowly gained_ground.
Then we came to the worst part. The climb looked very close to vertical (垂直的). To me, the wise choice was to go back down. Melody encouraged me to go on and she made it safely first. I stopped, unsure of my footing.“You can do it, Jean! I'm right here,” Melody called. She waited patiently, not asking me to hurry. I took a few deep breaths and kept climbing.
With no more mistakes, we came to the top finally. I was dirty and tired. But it didn't matter. I was at the top! I had never felt so alive.

22.When her friends decided to go climbing, Jean______.

I think adults are affected by media, songs and the Internet, and that is hard enough. After reading all of the magazines and looking at the models, my friends and I agree that our least favourite day of the year is when we wear swimsuits! It affects your whole mood and selfimage for the day. Think about how hard it is for young girls if they believe “how hot you look” is how valuable you are.
Here are some ways parents can be proactive in encouraging a healthy selfimage in their children.
First, teach what real value is. I think kids sometimes are confused about values. How valuable you are is not measured by how pretty you are on the outside and success is not measured by how famous you are. We were watching the Oscars and my 6yearold son said “She is so pretty,”and then quickly looked at me and said “You_are_prettier,_Mom.” And I said, “It's okay. There are many people prettier than me on the outside. I know that's not why you love me.” It is important to teach children this from an early age.
Second, tell your kids about “the grass is always greener syndrome.” It is very easy for all of us to see the glamour (魅力), whether it is in a famous singer or the most popular girl in the school. Do not dehumanize (使失去人性) and judge famous people. Talk about what problems they might have that are different from the problems your child has and maybe some of the same struggles, like maybe wanting acceptance from peers.
At last, use your mouth. Don't be afraid to have conversations with your child about how they're feeling about ads, songs, etc ... Boys too! You are the parent! Kids of all ages want and need boundaries whether they admit it or not. Take a stand and have confidence enough not to be followers and not to purchase clothing, music, or magazines that you don't believe sends the right message to your children!
语篇解读:本文是议论文。文章主要阐述了家长应如何帮助孩子树立正确的价值观。
24.What does the underlined word“It”in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Singing with friends.
B.Learning swimming skills.

25.The author's son said “You are prettier, Mom” probably ________.
A.to praise his mother
B.to comfort his mother
C.because he didn't like stars

26.What syndrome is mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.Lots of people like judging others.
B.Kids want to be popular in school.
C.People tend to like famous singers.
D.People always think others' life is better.

27.In the last paragraph, the author advises parents to ________.
A.set limits for their kids
B.make friends with their kids

A new study has found that background noise in the home or at school makes it more
difficult for toddlers (学步的儿童) to learn new words.
“Learning words is an important skill,” notes Brianna McMillan, who led the study. “Modern homes are filled with TV, radio, and people talking that could affect how children learn words at early ages. Our study suggests that adults should know the amount of background speech in an environment when they're talking with young children.”
Most studies of word learning are done in quiet laboratory settings. This study focused on word learning but tried to make the noisy environments children may face at home and at school. In the study, 106 children aged 22 to 30 months took part in three experiments in which they were taught names for new things and then tested on their ability to recognize the things when they were labeled (标注). First, toddlers listened to sentences featuring two new words. Then they were taught which things the new names referred to. Finally, the toddlers were tested on their ability to remember the words.
In the first experiment, 40 toddlers (aged 22 to 24 months) heard either louder or quieter background speech when learning the new words. Only toddlers who were in the quieter background speech successfully learned the words.
In the second experiment, a different group of 40 toddlers (aged 28 to 30 months) were tested to see whether somewhat older children could better overcome (克服) the effects of background noise. Again, only when background noise was quieter could the older toddlers successfully learn the new words.
In the third experiment, 26month older toddlers were taught the meanings of two word labels in a quiet environment. Next, the toddlers were taught the meanings of four word labels — two they had just heard and two new ones. Toddlers were taught the meanings of all these labels in the right noisy environment that damnified learning in the second experiment. The children learned the new words and their meanings only when they had first heard the labels in a quiet environment.
语篇解读:研究发现,在有响声的环境里学习会让学步的儿童学习词汇的效果打折扣。
28.What Brianna McMillan said in Paragraph 2 shows that ________.
A.kids think it is important to learn words
B.parents should talk with their children
C.noisy environments are common for kids
D.parents pay attention to noisy environments
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第二段的“Modern homes are filled with TV, radio, and people talking that could affect how children learn words at early ages.”可知,有响声的环境对于学步的儿童来说很普遍。
29.What did the kids do in the first experiment?
A.All of them studied in a quiet environment.
B.All of them studied in a noisy environment.
C.They studied in a noisy environment and then a quiet one.
D.Some studied in a noisy environment while the others in a quiet one.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第四段的“In the first experiment, 40 toddlers (aged 22 to 24 months) heard either louder or quieter background speech when learning the new words.”可知,其中一些在安静的环境里学习,另一些在有响声的环境里学习。
30.What does the underlined word “damnified” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Harmed. B.Caused.
C.Improved. D.Encouraged.
解析:选A 词义猜测题。根据第五段的“Again, only when background noise was quieter could the older toddlers successfully learn the new words.”可知,有响声的环境损害了学步的儿童的学习效果,故选A。

语篇解读:本文是记叙文。作者和同学利用暑假来中国体验中国文化。
56.becoming 考查非谓语动词。spend time (in) doing sth.是固定搭配,意为“花费时间做某事”。
57.visits 考查名词的数。visit是可数名词,空前没有限定词,故用其复数形式。
58.where 考查定语从句。分析句子结构可知,此处为定语从句,先行词为a Mandarin course(抽象的地点名词),空处在从句中作地点状语,故用where引导该定语从句。
59.a 考查冠词。have a taste of ...“体验……”为固定用法,故填不定冠词a。
60.deeper 考查形容词的比较级。这些活动让我们对中国文化和传统有了更深的理解。根据语境和much可知,此处要用deep的比较级。
61.At 考查介词。at the end of ...“在……结束时”为固定搭配,故填介词At。
62.had prepared/had been preparing
注意:不可填enjoying,因为go on doing sth.表示“继续做同一件事”。
64.honestly 考查副词。修饰动词用副词,故填honestly。
65.will be remembered 考查动词的时态和语态。分析句子结构可知,that引导定语从句,that指代an unforgettable experience,且与动词remember之间是被动关系,故用被动语态;再结合前面的is和语境可知,此处指中国之行将被我们所有人记住并深情回味,故用一般将来时,表示将来的动作。

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One day, my brother and I were alone in_our_apartment,_which was on the first floor of the building. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Dingdong! Dingdong! My younger brother had rushed to the_door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic_books,_which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The_man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the_kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the_police,_but the line was dead.
