Read and explore An art collector noticed a cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He realized that it was an antique and very valuable. He decided to buy the cat and offered to pay 200 dollars in the end. Then he asked the store owner to throw in the saucer, but the owner refused to give it away for he had sold 68 cats because of this lucky saucer. 3. Try to tell the story to your partner. Read and explore 4. Work in pairs with one reading Story B while the other reading Story C and complete the notes on the Worksheet. Which of the three stories do you like most? Why? When an art collector noticed a cat lapping milk from a very valuable saucer in the doorway of a store, he decided to buy the cat. Here, the writer described the collector’s behavior by using the words “causally” and “innocently”. (Story A) Story A Then he asked the store owner to throw in the saucer, but the owner refused to give it away for he had sold 68 cats because of this lucky saucer. Naturally, a humorous effect can be achieved. Story B Sherlock Holmes did not directly speak out the problem he found, but guided Dr. Watson to observe and find. But the two people focused on different things. Naturally, a humorous effect can be achieved when revealing the problem in the end. Story C In order to highlight Grock’s long-term depressed state, in the text, continuous tense ( present perfect continuous, past perfect continuous ) is used. He went to see the doctor. When the doctor suggested that he see the clown, he replied he was the clown. An amazing clown couldn’t cheer himself up. Naturally, a humorous effect can be achieved. Think and share 2. Summarise how to make a story funny. (1) Create a result that is contrary to people’s expectation. (2) Create intentional ambiguity in the context of situation. Think and share 3. What have you learned from the stories ? We can understand how humor can bring happiness to ourselves and others. More importantly, they can cultivate our sense of humor and form our positive attitude towards life. Homework 1. Read the texts aloud. 2. Have a group / pair discussion. Work in groups of four.
