1 Mark Twain ----Period 3(Additional Reading), Unit 8 Book IV, New Century English 教材分析: 本课是一篇介绍文学家马克吐温的阅读文章。第八单元课文是改编自马克吐温小 说“王子与贫儿”的一段节选,因此可以把这篇 additional reading 看作是课文阅 读的延伸。文章内容包括了对于他在美国文学史上地位、人生经历、部分作品和 写作风格的简要介绍,文章长度,语言难度适中。 学情分析: 学生有一定的阅读能力,听说技能相对滞后,同学之间的英语语言能力参差不齐。 大部分学生态度认真,但是缺乏自主学习的能力和积极性。较低的学习动机表现 在英语课堂上学生不愿意主动回答问题,尤其是用英语回答问题,由于能力差异, 学生更适应以学习小组方式进行课堂活动。学生知道作家马克吐温和他的部分作 品,但是了解并不具体全面。 Teaching Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 1. achieve a good understanding of the text with reading skills such as scanning and skimming 2. promote speaking skills by retelling the text 3. understand Mark Twin’s writing style and cultivate interest in his works Teaching Focus and Difficulties:  Guiding students to reinforce comprehension, organize information and present orally an introduction of Mark Twain Teaching Resources: the textbook Teaching Procedures 2 Stages Teacher’s activities Students’ activities Purposes Pre-reading 1. Introduce Mark Twain; provide students with some information about Mark Twain with a guessing game. 2. Explain new words in the information about Mark Twain and lead students to read them. 1. Play a guessing game and learn some knowledge of Mark Twain. 2. Learn the meaning of some new words and read them aloud. To engage the students in the topic of the reading passage. To frontload new words. While-readi ng 1. Have students scan the text and match the subtitles with paragraphs; make students underline words and phrases related to the main idea of each paragraph. 2. Guide students to read Para A&B to work out the chart “Profile for Mark Twain” and provide supplementary information. 3. Guide students to read Para C-E respectively and answer questions: 1) What did Mark Twain mean by saying “Against the assault 1. Scan the text; match the subtitles with paragraphs and underline relevant information in the passage. 2. Read Para A&B; complete the chart “Profile for Mark Twain”. 3. Read Para C-E; answer the questions about “Running for Governor” and analyze Twain’s writing style. To cultivate the abilities to extract and summarize information.
