1 Teaching Plan Teaching objectives: By the end of the class, the students are expected to I. know more about one essential characteristic of cats that they can survive falls; II. have their reading comprehension enhanced through skimming and scanning and learn to integrate reading comprehension with summary writing and speaking (in the form of debating); III. become more aware of the necessity to protect animals’ rights and get encouraged to take more care of them. Teaching Important Points: Enable students to improve their reading, speaking and writing skills on the basis of their critical thinking. Teaching Difficult Points: How to have the students summarize the text effectively by paraphrasing and how to get them to cooperate well to perform a successful debate in limited time. Teaching aids: Multi-media and blackboard Teaching Methods 1. Reading-to-Speaking Approach; 2. Communicative Approach (Task-based Instruction) Teaching Procedures: Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Purposes Step 1: Pre-reading (5 min) Task 1 Show students a sketch of a cat drawn stroke by stroke to get the students to guess what the animal is. Watch the sketch on the screen and guess the animal. To introduce the topic of “cat” and arouse their interest in this lesson. Task 2 Show students pictures of cats with various facial expressions and some cat cartoon characters they are familiar with to get them to tell some distinctive features of cats. Look at the pictures on the screen and try to generalize the features of cats. To introduce the major topic of the lesson --- the cats can survive falls. Step 2: While-reading (23 min) Skimming (5 min) Play the video clip of the text and get the students to tell the main idea of each of the paragraphs by finding the topic sentence as well as the sentence indicating the two paragraphs’ relation. Watch the video clip and generalize the main ideas of the two paragraphs. To help the students to obtain a clear structure of the text. Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities Purposes Step 2: While-reading (23 min) Scanning (10 min) Have the students scan Paragraph 1 and do the T or F exercises. After that, get students to Scan Paragraph 1 and do the T or F exercises. Have the students scan Paragraph 2 and fill in the blanks in a table showing the basic information about the experiment. Scan Paragraph 2 and fill in the blanks. Summary (8 min) Review the basic aspects of summarizing news and give an outline of the text on the first column of the slide necessary for students to fill in the blanks of a possible version of the summary on the right column. Remind the students to fill in the blanks by paraphrasing. Fill in the blanks in a possible version of the summary provided by the instructor. To consolidate the comprehension of the text and the essential paraphrasing skills to summarize the texts. Step3: Post-reading (10 min) A Model Parliamentary Debate Have students discuss on the issue of experimenting on animals and get them to form two groups on the sides of both the government and the opposition. Four representatives from each side should choose their own roles in the assembly to deliver their views in the debate in around 30-40 seconds per person. Establish their own views on animal testing and eloquently deliver their arguments. To help students get familiar with British parliamentary debating system and what’s more important, to further comprehend the very essence of the experiment narrated in the text: testing on animals, thus allowing them to have a chance to voice their opinions on this issue critically. Step 4: Assignment (2 min) Write an argumentative essay about your views on experimenting on animals in around 120-150 words. 查看更多
