To familiarize students that spiders are actually friends to humans and enemies to insects. b. To improve students’ awareness of understanding and protecting nature and natural creatures. Difficult points: Some facts about spiders, and how to understand that spiders are actually enemies to insects and friends to humans. Show students a riddle about spiders 2. Show students some pictures about spider man and lead them to think whether spiders are good or bad. 1) Think and make a guess. 2) Look at pictures on spider man and think about today’s topic whether spiders are enemies or friends to humans. To arouse students’ interest in spiders and elicit the topic While-reading 1. Skimming List several questions for students to answer before skimming. 2. Listen and play Guide students to listen to the recording and read the beginning of the play and draw their attention to the features of a play. 3. Read and think a. Ask students to scan the remaining part, and lead them to think “What does Winston tell Betty about spiders then?” b. Show students some pictures on how spiders help famers kill insects. Present a table and ask students to finish it. c. Show students some pictures and ask students to summarize the properties of spider silk and its uses. 4.Summary Lead students to finish a chart. Think about the questions and then skim the play. Listen and read after the text recording. Play the beginning out in pairs. 1) Scan the main body of the excerpt and underline those new words. 2) Look at pictures, listen to the recording and finish a table. 3) Look at pictures and think about the uses of spider silk and poison. Think and make a summary of spiders’ benefits. To help students understand the general idea and structure of the play. To learn about the features of a play and how to read a play well.
