A
I'd been asked to go to an editor's office
with the old program “We have a story we think you'd be perfect for”. Here was the topic: We
want you to write about how middle-aged men have no friends. Seeing that,I couldn't help
thinking, “Excuse me? I have plenty of friends.” Then the editor told me there were all sorts
of evidence out there to show how men, as they age, let their close friendships go, and that
the fact can cause all sorts of problems and have a terrible impact on their health.
As I walked back to my desk in the newsroom-a distance of maybe 100 yards-I quickly
took stock of my friend list. First of all, there was my friend Mark. Wait, how often do we
actually hang out? Maybe four or five times a year? And then there was another best friend
from high school, Rory, and…I actually could not remember the last time I'd seen him.
There were all those other good friends who seemed as if they're still in my life because
we follow one another via social media, but as I ran down the list of those I considered real,
true, lifelong friends, I realized that it had been years since I saw many of them, even decades
for a few.
By the time I got back to my desk, I realized that I was indeed perfect for this story, not
because I was unusual in any way, but because my story was very, very typical. And as I
looked into what that means, I realized that in the long term, I was heading down a path that
was very, very dangerous. And I knew I needed a change.

the world record had been broken three times. However, he focused on his own performance
and won gold. Hoy said hearing his name followed by the words “Olympic champion” was

(2021·辽宁鞍山市·高三月考) Grays Peak (山顶) in Colorado rises
14,278 feet above sea level, too high for trees to grow toward the top, yet there are plenty of
bushes and rocks.
It was August 2018, and Wedelstedt, 56, was on her way back down the path with three
friends. A storm was coming, and they were anxious to get off the mountain. When they
approached a rocky drop of a couple of feet, Wedelstedt decided to jump over it. She landed
on her left leg. Then she heard the snap (咔嚓声).
Every step after that was great pain. Before long, she had to stop. As one friend ran
down to get help, a number of other hikers, all strangers, attempted to help Wedelstedt down
the narrow path by walking on either side of her to support her weight, but that proved slow
and dangerous.
Finally, one hiker, Matt, asked her, “How do you feel about a fireman’s carry?” Before
she knew it, he had lifted her over his shoulder. “Now, I’m not tiny,” says Wedelstedt, a
former college basketball star. Matt clearly couldn’t carry her all the way down by himself.
So six hikers and one of her friends took turns carrying her while she tried to make light of a
difficult situation. Three hours and two rock-strewn (遍布) miles later, this human conveyor
belt finally met the doctors, who took Wedelstedt to the hospital.
She has mostly recovered from her hike, but Wedelstedt knows she’ll never shake one
thing from that day: the memory of the band of strangers who came to her rescue. “I am still
in awe.” says Wedelstedt.

A.She was caught in a heavy storm. B.She injured her leg.
C.She was blocked by rocks and bushes. D.She got lost the the mountain.
10.How did Matt help Wedelstedt?
A.By taking her directly to the hospital. B.By calling in firemen.
C.By carrying her down the mountain. D.By giving her first aid.
11.What is Wedelstedt's attitude towards the band of strangers?
A.Respectful. B.Ambiguous. C.Sympathetic. D.Tolerant.
12.What is the best title for the text?
A.Narrow Paths B.Lifelong friendship

Variety is the spice of language. The
words listed in this book are not intended to replace those that most people use most of the
time. Rather, they are variations of the theme. We tend to use the same old words over and
over again, to limit our power of expression by limiting our vocabulary. There is nothing
wrong with the “old words”. 16.
How often have you spoken of having an accident? 17. Everyone talks of the usual
thing to do or expect. Might not one, to enrich his speech, speak of the customary thing or
why not occasionally describe a situation as aggravated instead of worsened?
18. Vary them with the “new words”. English is an especially rich language, and often
there are tiny differences between two words that are generally regarded as the same. Thus, a
mishap (小事故) is not merely an accident; it is an unfortunate accident. (There can be
fortunate accidents, like bumping into an old friend you haven’t seen for years and whose
address you’ve lost.) 19. Other examples: fragrant, for smelling good, or having a nice smell;
morsel, for bit; deft, for skillful or clever.
No doubt a good many words in the list will be familiar to you, but do you use them, or
do they remain the “property” of others? They are included to introduce the variety, into your
speech and writing. 20. Let them compete, and make your language all the richer.
A.Don’t throw away the “old words”.
B.Our interest in learning will be discouraged.
C.But why not enhance your speech and writing by learning to use new ones from time to
time as alternatives?
D.English words are grouped according to their origins.
E.Can we use the alternative mishap once in a while?
F.So, using mishap instead of accident, you must be sure of the distinction.
G.Try to make these words your own, as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have
managed with in the past.

I was busy with my work when I noticed a very untidy man standing in the hall. He
looked lost and possibly homeless, or maybe even drunken because he was unsteady on his
feet. He made his way over to me and I asked if I could help him. He looked at me for a few
minutes and thanked me for not judging him like everyone else. He finally said yes as he
gave me some old papers. He asked if I could make him a copy of his military paperwork.
As I made the copies he told me that he became injured in the war. I took a deep breath
and simply replied, “Thank you for your service.”
Then I noticed he was holding a small brown paper bag tightly. The bag was dirty so I
asked him if he would like a plastic bag for his paperwork. He nodded and then asked me to
hold out my hand. As I opened my hand he carefully placed two items in my hand. My eyes
were filled with tears. This wonderful man had just placed his Purple Heart and a Silver Star
into my hand. I gave him a salute just like a real soldier.
I thanked him, one of the nation’s heroes, for his service again. He smiled and carefully
placed his items back in his bag and started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars from
his pocket. He turned back and asked if we had a vending machine so he could get some
cookies.
I told him the right direction, but after looking at his money he put it back in his pocket
and started to walk off the wrong way. I walked to him and asked if I could buy him some
cookies. He refused, saying he didn’t want a handout and that he would eat something for
lunch when he got home.

A 项“Don’t throw away the “old words”.(不要扔掉旧词)” 与下文一
致,故选 A。
19.
上文“English is an especially rich language, and often there are tiny differences between two words
that are generally regarded as the same. Thus, a mishap (小事故) is not merely an accident; it is an
examples: fragrant, for smelling good, or having a nice smell; morsel, for bit; deft, for skillful or
F 项“So, using mishap instead of accident,
you must be sure of the distinction.(所以,用 mishap 代替 accident,你必须明白其中的区别)”
20.
上文“No doubt a good many words in the list will be familiar to you, but do you use them, or do
they remain the “property” of others? They are included to introduce the variety, into your speech
G 项“Try to make these words your own,
as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have managed with in the past.(试着把这些词变成

Paragraph 1:
I couldn't let the hero go hungry. I said, “Sir, I know you don't take any handout. But can I buy
our nation's hero lunch for his service?” He was surprised for a minute and did not refuse this time. I
walked outside with him and into a park near my office. He asked if he could just sit in the park
while I got his lunch. He didn't want anyone making fun of him, so I ran to the nearest shop and
bought his lunch.
Paragraph 2:
Then I rejoined him in the park. I sat down with him for only a few minutes because I needed to
work. He thanked me over and over for my kindness and for not judging him like everyone else. I
hugged him and then he stood up and gave me a formal salute. Tears flowed freely down my face. I
told him it was an honor to meet one of our nation's heroes. I would never forget the lesson this total
stranger taught me that day.
