Iran Mall

Twenty years ago, I spent three years in a high school of Fukushima as an assistant language teacher. The first thing I noticed there was what the students were wearing: dark, high-collared uniforms for the boys and sailor outfits for the girls. I was also astonished to learn that there were classes on Saturdays, year-round after-school sports and club practices, and many hours of study for university entrance exams. During the three years, I learned much about Japanese culture, and meanwhile, I tried to use my own school experiences to tell them about American school culture.
Growing up in the US, none of the schools I attended required uniforms. I don't even recall any serious restrictions of student dress other than some loosely enforced(强制执行)guidelines prohibiting T-shirts with inappropriate language. In junior high, I, a basketball boy, relished wearing shirts with logos(标识)that turned me into a walking billboard for my favorite basketball teams. That was really cool.
Another thing I shared with my students was about extra-curricular activities. In American schools, joining a sports team or other after-school clubs was purely optional. Actually, school sports teams often had tryouts, meaning only the best players were allowed to join the teams for some sports. Each sport also had a specific place on the calendar. Football at my high school was August through late November. Basketball was October to March and the rest of the year was the off-season. Most schools had cheerleaders and a band that performed during breaks in the game and at halftime to entertain the crowd. The cheerleaders and musicians in the band usually practiced year-round.
I explained these differences to my students in Fukushima through the overlap(重叠)of our common words in English and Japanese. When class ended, they'd bow and thank me for the sharing. Then they'd run around the

room and spill into the hallway, talking and laughing with each other-a heartwarming sight and a sweet memory for me.

"You're what you eat." When people say that, they mean a healthy diet can improve your health. But the opposite is also true. In fact, if you're in adolescence, eating junk(垃圾)food can harm your body and your brain.
Junk food affects adolescent brains in ways that damage their ability to think, learn and remember; it can also make it harder to control impulsive(冲动)behavior, says Amy Reichelt. It may even up a teen's risk of depression and anxiety, she notes. Reichelt is a brain and nutrition specialist at Canada's Western University in London, Ontario. Adolescents are more sensitive than any other age group to foods with much processed fat and sugar, she says.
She and two other researchers recently reviewed over 100 studies about how poor food choices can impact adolescent brains. They found that adolescent brains aren't yet fully formed. And that actually leads to three problems, says Reichelt. First, adolescent brains are still developing the ability to assess risks and control actions. Second, teen brains get more pleasure than adult brains do from eating junk food. Third, adolescent brains can be more easily influenced by their environment or diet, etc. Together, these all can combine to make junk food both hard to stay away from and extra bad for teen health.
Other researchers have also found links between brain health and what teenage kids eat. Felice Jacka, an expert in nutrition at Deakin University in Victoria, Australia, is one of them. She and her team interviewed over

2,000 11-to 14-year-olds living in London. Each answered questions about what they ate and how they felt mentally. The researchers then scored each kid's answers for signs of depression. Adolescents who ate the most junk food were nearly 50%more likely to show signs of depression. So teenagers should avoid junk food for the health of their brains, suggested the researchers.

A group of British student engineers is reinventing the wheel. Dealing with the problem of microplastics caused by car tires, they have created a special device that collects the special plastic particles(颗粒)called tire dust.
Most people know that cars are a big source of pollution by means of gas emissions(排放). However, the majority aren't aware that tires send out microplastic particles every time a vehicle accelerates, brakes or turns a corner on the road. Now, thanks to the invention by four talented students, this pollution can be reduced.
The device they designed is placed on the wheel to collect microplastics sent out from tires through the use of electrostatics(静电学). The first device alone collected around 60 percent of all airborne particles coming from tires, which means a significant reduction on the environmental influence.
A report by Nature shows that 34 percent of tire wear particles and 34 percent of brake wear particles end up in the world's oceans. This affects marine life, which in turn negatively influences the fish we eat. Another report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature suggests that tire dust has become an even bigger source of marine plastic pollution than plastic waste in many developing countries.
The design cleverly takes the tire dust and upcycles it. After the particles are captured by the innovative device, the group has many practical uses for it. Ink can be created from tire dust, and the microplastic particles can be used for 3D printing and even the production of new tires.

This device offers even more exciting possibilities as it provides real-time data on driving habits and environmental conditions, helping to calculate the rate of wear and how to improve it.
While it is not yet ready to be made in large numbers, the device is an excellent example of how technology and innovative thinking can protect the environment from pollution without people having to give up the comfort and convenience that driving offers.
