Dear Editor,
Our student union has recently conducted a survey on what
may affect students outside-class reading. The result is as
follows:
It can be seen clearly from the chart above that 72% of the
students think that schoolwork takes up most of their day,
leaving little time for outside-class reading whereas no more
than 4% of the interviewees place the blame on the high
prices of books, which they are not able to afford.
What comes next is the objection coming from their parents. They
believe that the outside-class reading is definitely a waste of time and
energy and hold the view that students are expected to devote their
extra-curricular time exclusively to their homework after school.
Therefore, students who are keen on outside-class reading, as far as
their parents are concerned, are usually regarded as time and energy-
consuming.
Besides, approximately 8% of the students are not satisfied with the
fact that the school library, which seems to be the only place to find
and read outside-class books, provide a limited(inadequate,
insufficient) number of books for readers . In the meantime, its
opening time is too short and cannot match the students’ timetable
in most cases.
Therefore, I am of the opinion that studens are spending less and less
time reading after schoolwhich is a serious problem that deserves
special attention.

encourage our outside-class reading.
