One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight
by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they
started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom,
“I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a
high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but
forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried, “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving,
but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane
was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much
to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling somewhere
at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some
berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better.
Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the
lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me?
Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes
later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she
should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.
Paragraph 1: But the helicopter didn’t come back again, and the day became darker.
Paragraph 2: Jane woke up at the daybreak.

One Possible Version:
Paragraph 1: But the helicopter didn't come back again, and the day became darker. Jane
was so tired, hungry, and extremely frightened. She thought to herself, “If only I had not
quarreled with Tom. Where is Tom? He must have made the emergency call. What in need is
enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow, I will be likely to guide the helicopter.” Lying
beside the stream, she fell asleep very soon. Suddenly, she heard the shouts of tigers, which
made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was quiet
again. In the terrible darkness, she slept again.
Paragraph 2: Jane woke up at the daybreak. She caught sight of a fisherman at a distance,
with whose help she climbed to an open area. To her great joy, a helicopter flew overhead just at
that moment. The fisherman helped flag her yellow blouse wildly. This did catch the rescuers’
attention! Jane was rescued. Seeing Tom, she told him how much she missed him. Never would
they be away from each other. Tom gave her the warmest and longest hug she had ever received.
People around smiled with satisfaction.

Ariana caught another whiff and tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but
Ashley only moved closer and continued talking. Ariana felt trapped. She wanted badly to tell
Ashley that she didn't smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting Ashley's
feelings? Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw in the trash, thankful for the
excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley's hair was
tangled, and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her
seat, vowing that she would not sit with Ashley tomorrow.
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother, “There's a girl named
Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”
“She's probably having a tough day,” said her mother.
“No, it's not just one day. She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit
next to her, either.”
“I don't think you understand Ashley's situation, so let me ask you this …” Her mother's
tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you'll look nice
when you go to school?”
“You do,” answered Ariana.
“Who makes sure you're bathed and cleaned every day? And your clothes are washed and
neatly ironed?”
“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.
“Do you live in a nice home? Do you have enough to eat?”
Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley
couldn't help her situation because she was only seven years old — the same age as Ariana.
Grownups are supposed to take care of kids.
“Why doesn't her family take better care of her?” Ariana asked.
“Not all children live in the best situation,” her mother said. “The best thing you can do for
Ashley is to treat her with kindness and sympathy.”
Paragraph 1: Ariana bit her bottom lip. Sadness for Ashley filled her heart.
Paragraph 2: At the end of the school year, the second grade prepared to go on a field trip
to the zoo.
One Possible Version:
Paragraph 1: Ariana bit her bottom lip. Sadness for Ashley filled her heart. She vowed that
from now on she would be the best friend that she could be to Ashley. At school, Ariana
voluntarily sat next to Ashley. She partnered with Ashley to help with her schoolwork. On the
days that Ashley smelled bad, she moved away a little or politely asked Ashley for a little room.
She was always careful not to hurt Ashley’s feelings.
Paragraph 2: At the end of the school year, the second grade prepared to go on a field trip
to the zoo. The day before the trip, the teacher announced that the class needed to bring lunch
from home. Ashley was absent, and Ariana worried that her friend would not have lunch
because Ashley always ate the school lunch. Therefore, the next day, Ariana asked her mom to
make an extra lunch for Ashley — just in case. When Ariana got to school, she discovered that
she had been right. Ashley had not brought any lunch for the field trip. When Ariana gave the
lunch to Ashley, she saw tears well up Ashley’s eyes.

【浙江省磐安县第二中学 20192020 学年期中考试英语】
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided
to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of
New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked
us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My
dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water
rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have
breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina
feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze. I was
impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as
my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put
on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't
be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!” “OK!” my
dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful
and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon
sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven blanket spread out upon the
ground just for us.
Paragraph 1: Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
Paragraph 2: We had no idea where we were and it got dark.
One Possible Version:
Paragraph 1: Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. It was furry with a
coat of gorgeous brown hair. After looking up at me with its pair of red bulbs, it began to scurry
ahead. “Why not catch it and bring it back to Uncle Paul? They must be very happy.” With this
thought, I rode hard to hunt for it. Dad saw it and had to follow me. The rabbit was very agile,
soon entering a mountain forest. We had to get down the horses, continuing the chase and
totally forgetting the track back. Even though we tried desperately, the rabbit was out of sight in
the end. Then we realized we were in the deep part of a forest.
Paragraph 2: We had no idea where we were and it got dark. And dark clouds seemed to be
gathering in the sky. Taking out the cell phone, we soon found something was wrong: no signal,
no compass. Frightened, I stared at Dad, trying to seek a solution for the trouble from him.
“Maybe what you have learned in geography class works,” he said, pointing to the stars in the
sky. I knew he meant the North Star. Soon we found the right direction. We hurried back finding
the horses. And the river was in sight again. The family was worried and about to call the police.
At the sight of us, they were relieved and hugged us tightly. There was nothing more memorable
than this rabbit hunting in my life!
