Text 10
Mr Black worked in an office in London, but he lived in the country and came to work by
train every day. The station was not very far from his office, and Mr Black always went on foot,
and he always went along the same street. Every evening he passed a poor man near a bridge.
The man sat at the side of the road and sold matches, and there was always an old dog near him.
A piece of wood was around the dog's neck, and the words “I'm blind.” were on the piece of wood.
Mr Black was a kind man. He gave him a little money, but he did not take any of his matches.
Then yesterday Mr Black had a lot of work in his office and was very late. He said, “My train
always leaves at five minutes past six, and it is ten minutes to six now. I'm not going to the poor
man today, and I'm not going to give him anything. I've given him a lot of money, and I've never
taken any of his matches. ”He came to the man and his dog, but he did not stop. He walked
quickly towards the railway station. But the poor man stood up quickly, ran after him and said,
“You haven't given me anything today. You're always very kind to me. Give me a little money
today, too. I'm a poor man. ”Mr Black stopped and looked at the man. Then he said, “You are a
blind man. How did you follow me?”The poor man said, “No, I'm not blind. My old dog is.”

The Internet has led to a huge increase in credit-card (信用
卡)fraud. Your card information can even be on sale on an
illegal website. Websites offering cheap goods and services
should be regarded with care. Online shoppers who enter their credit-card information may never
receive the goods they thought they had bought.
The thieves then go shopping with your card number—or sell the
information over the Internet. Computer hackers (黑客) have broken down security systems,
raising questions about the safety of card holder information.
Credit-card firms are now fighting against online fraud. Master-card is working on plans
for web only credit-cards, with a lower credit limit. The card can be used only for shopping
online. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep from being cheated.
Ask about your credit-card firm's online rules: under British law, card holders are
responsible for the first $ 78 of any fraudulent spending. And shop only at secure sites, send your
credit-card information only if the website offers advanced security system.
If the security is in place, a letter will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
The website address may also start with https://—the extra “s” stands for security. If in doubt,
give your credit-card information over the telephone.
Keep your password safe: most online sites require a user name and password before placing
an order. Treat your password with care.
文章大意:本文主要介绍了信用卡使用中的信息安全问题。

The Internet and the World Web (网) are great places now. We use the word “place”
because so many of the things you can do online are similar to the things
you can do wherever people gather together—in homes, schools, libraries,
shopping centers, or at family reunions or town meetings. The Net allows
people to learn shop, find important information, and communicate,
whether they're local, global or simply virtual (虚的).
The Web is useful. You can find old friends online. You can research and book flights,
check the weather, find breaking news, and find out information about schools and colleges.
You can even place an order for books, CDs, computers and cars.
The Internet is also fun. You can write to old friends or check out their web pages. Enjoy web
-based soap operas. Laugh at online jokes. Join in a live Net Event. Chat with other Internet
surfers(漫游者). Check to see if your name appears anywhere on the Web. Millions of users log
on the Net every day, and it's not just to do research. There's a lot of fun there. That's one reason
why it's called web “surfing”.
Of course, the first step to use the Web for business or for fun is learning how to work a “web
browser”. If you're new to computers, it may take a while before you are completely comfortable
with your browser. Don't worry. You don't have to be a computer whiz. The basics of a web
browser are very much like the basics of modern computers—learning how to point and click the
mouse, learning how to scroll up and down(浏览)a page of text, and learning how to use pull-
down menus (下拉菜单).Again, be patient. There's no time limit on web surfing.Give yourself a
chance to explore (探索) the browseritself while you explore the Web.

There's more to learning math than paying attention in class,
according to recent research. It shows that kids' math performance
may be better for those with a natural gift for sensing numbers.
Scientists showed a number of dots (小圆点)for a very short
time—some blue, others red—and asked someone to determine which group of dots was
more. The dots appear and disappear so quickly that it becomes impossible to count, so the
numbers have to be sensed instead.
In the experiment, researchers studied 174 children between 3 and 5 years of age to judge
their ANS (the Approximate Number System, 略估数字系统) with computer tests. Then they
judged children's math and verbal(口头的)skills through a lot of tests and asking parents to list
common words in their children's vocabulary.
Allowing for age, vocabulary size and speed of taking the test, the group still found better
ANS scores to be connected with children's early math abilities. In the past it was thought to be
the result of different teaching styles, but this connection seems to already exist before kids start
formal math education in school.
However, the authors of the paper admit they cannot use ANS to predict math
ability easily. They said that they could not control other parts of learning, which may also
have an effect.

答案:D 细节理解题。由倒数第二段第一句可知,研究人员已将实验中儿童的年龄、
词汇量以及测试的速度考虑在内,只有 D 项没有提及。
31.The underlined word “predict” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ________.
A.lose B.forecast
C.show D.improve
答案:B 词义猜测题。根据 However 可知,“the authors of the paper admit they cannot use
ANS...”与上文为转折关系,同时根据“They said that they could not control other parts of
learning, which may also have an effect.”可知,略估数字系统并不能轻易地用来预测数学能
力,因为学习能力还可能受到其他因素的影响,故选 B。

The Internet has opened up a whole new on-line world for us to meet, chat and go where
we've never been before. But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some basic rules
of behavior that should be followed when online. __36__ Imagine how you'd feel if you were in
the other person's shoes.
For anything you're about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person's
face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.__37__ If someone in the chat room is rude to you,
your instinct is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. __38__ If it was caused by a
disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to
respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
__39__ Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how
to communicate. When someone makes a mistake whether it's a stupid question or an
unnecessarily long answer be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say
anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good
manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else.__40__ At the same time, if
you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have
offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex, and marital status.
Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal
information, don't ask such questions.

only way to make it to work on time would be to catch a cab. So I stopped the first cab __63__
drove by my house. When I got into the back seat I saw a brand new iPhone 4 __64__(sit) right
next to me in the middle. I asked the driver __65__ he had just dropped the last person off and
showed him the phone. There was a language barrier __66__ us but he knew what I meant. He
pointed at __67__ girl walking up the street, we drove up to her and I rolled down the window and
yelled out to her. She was so __68__(thank) and by the look on her face I could tell how grateful
she was. As I know from previous experience,__69__ you leave your cell phone in a cab, most
likely it's __70__(go). After she got the phone back, I heard someone walking past her say,
“Today's your lucky day!” I was happy I could help her. Within 2 minutes of walking out my
front door I helped change someone's day from bad to good, quite the way to start the day.

答案:
Good_morning,_everyone!
The topic of my speech today is “Friends and smiles go hand in hand”. It conveys the
message that friendly smiles really count in our life. Our smile attracts those we would call our
friends.
When I was in primary school, I was lucky, to be present at a summer camp. One morning,
we were given an exercise where we had to go off for a given task on our own. As everyone was
walking around to find a quiet place, I saw a boy feeling down. We looked at each other for a
moment and then I smiled at him. The small gesture cheered him up and helped him not feel
lonely. The friendly smile I gave him helped. Since then we have become close friends. So next
time you meet someone that feels sad or wears a frown, smile genuinely and you are sure to make
a lifelong friend.
Thank you for listening.
