Londoners are great readers. They buy a large number of newspapers and magazines and even of books-especially paperbacks(平装书), which are still rather cheap in spite of the ever-increasing rises in the cost of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books too, printed on good paper and fastened between hard covers.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize(专营) in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these isCharing Cross Roadin the very heart ofLondon. Here the bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the famous one which calls itself “the biggest book-shop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will get any kind of books, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in books on philosophy(哲学), politics or any other of the many subjects about which books may be written. I hear many parents say that their teen-age(十几岁的) children are rebellious(反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a god look at the present rebellion. It seems that teen-agers are al taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one anther’s hands for safety.
They say they want to dress as the please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd in doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(茧) – into a large cocoon.
It is becoming harder an harder for a teen-ager to stand up against the poularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teen-age market. These days every teen-age can learn from newspapers and TV what a teen-ager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励) high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teen-ager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

C. It is not necessarily bad for a teen-ager to disagree with his or her classmates.
