Faces of stone
Easter Island is just a dot(小点) in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. 31 And
it is volcanic, which is probably why it has no trees. Each of the island’s three corners
has an extinct volcano (死火山).
Easter Island was relatively unknown until 1722, when Dutch Admiral Roggeveen
arrived with the first Europeans ever to set foot on the island. To their great surprise,
they were greeted by hundreds of extremely large stone statues lining the shores. 32
All were “figures of men with short square bodies and strangely oversized heads, many
balancing red stone hats on their heads.” They were very similar to one another. 33
Each face was taller than a human being, and many were as tall as a four-story building.
For an early society to have made these huge figures with only stone tools was an
amazing achievement in itself. 34 The discovery of a large stone quarry (采石场)
unlocked the secrets. It was obvious that this was the site where the statues had been
carved (雕刻) before being moved to their final resting places. Some statues appeared
to be complete, while others had hardly been started. When work on these statues
suddenly stopped, some were in the process of being moved. It was obvious that the
statue builders had cut down the island’s trees to make rolling logs (滚木) and wooden
scaffolds (支架). 35
A. The history of Easter Island is rich.
B. It is a relatively small island with a total area of only 63 square miles.
C. For centuries, scientists have tried to measure the weight of the statues.
D. Each had a large nose and long ears, but they were not exactly the same.
E. To the Europeans, the unusually large legless creatures appeared strange indeed.
F. Then they used these tools to carry the huge statues from the quarry(采石场) to the
island’s coast.
G. What was even more mysterious was how the people moved the creations, some of
which weighed many tons.

第二节 书面表达 (满分 20分)
A Letter to the President of the University
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing this letter to you to express my concern about the sports facilities in our school. I have noticed that our school has very limited resources and students feel bored because they cannot find a place to have sports and games after class.
As we both know, sports are very important for the sound growth of the young. If they have access to quality sports facilities, they can not only relax but also keep fit.
My proposal is to build a new sports area. It should be designed with soccer players, basketball players, and ping-pong players in mind. It should have a different section for each activity and be available to students all year round. I believe such facilities will meet our sporting needs.
Thank you for your reading this letter.
Yours faithfully,
Li Ming
