When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends ask me how I can stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kind of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.
It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi is the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.
When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, others chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.
Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids play while their parents sit nearby. I can see and hear almost everything from there. People-watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park!
Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must have been hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud.
When I’m old, I hope that I too will have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.

The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based FareStart does. Not only does the charity provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.
13.2% of people in Seattle live below the poverty line. Since its beginning in 1999, FareStart has grown steadily, graduating 110 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid employment within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those employees still held their positions six months later.
Students at FareStart begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with assisting in the kitchen preparing meals for people in shelters, the trainees move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the FareStart restaurant in downtown Seattle.
The combination of practical skill-training with other support services allows successful graduates like Jayna, a former nurse who lost her license due to drug and alcohol abuse, to get on in life. Since graduating from FareStart, she has worked in a small house at Yellowstone National Park. “I could not have put myself back together again,”she said.“FareStart did that for me.”
Kevin, who graduated from FareStart in April 2012, is another success story. Previously homeless, he found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving FareStart, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through — including holding down his current job for almost a year.
Going forward, FareStart plans to shift more focus to women, particularly women with children, who sadly make up an increasing percentage of the local homeless population. The organization also aims to double its student intake when it makes a gradual move to a bigger space in Seattle’s Pacific Tower.

myself. My new novel, The Love Song ofMiss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The UnlikelyPilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, QueenieHennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen forthe Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’sside of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, Iwon the Tinniswood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award forNew Writer of the Year. Before I was a writer, I was an actress in theatre and on TV. I’ll take questions from theaudience now.
