When my family moved to the United States from Colombia, I was 9 years old and knew little about English. As time passed, teachers finally knew all of their students and slowly everyone began to head inside, except for me. No one called out my name, and no one seemed to know I existed. I spent the next month in my new classroom quietly. I felt a wave of fear, loneliness and sadness came over me.
It turned out the school administration never cared that I didn't speak English, but something else was teaching me English. Every morning when my aunt drove me to school and picked me up, she always had 106.7 Light FM on. It was this station that introduced my young ears to the English sounds of R&B, soul, jazz and much more.
Because of Sabrina theTeenage Witch, I learned the difference between"witch"and"which".While watching the TV show SouthPark, I was attracted by the funny characters. I related"You bastards!” to anger and saved it in my mental word bank. In fact, thanks to pop culture, the world of English became readily available to me while it was being turned down at school.
I also learned how to express my emotions thanks to pop culture. One day at school, we were taking a math quiz and the whole class was quiet. Suddenly, the tip of my pencil broke and I yelled, “You bastards!" Everyone held their breath in surprise and I laughed to myself because something at that moment told me I had just learned my first bad word in English.
Four months passed before the school placed me into an ESL program. By this time, I was speaking broken English and making myself understood. Finally, I learned how to speak and write English at a more advanced level, and I owe it all to pop culture.

＂For people who are anxious about math，posture（姿势）makes giant difference,”said Professor of Health Education Erik Peper. “The slumped-over（下趴）position shuts them down and their brains do not work well. They cannot think clearly.” Before the study began, students filled out an anonymous questionnaire asking them to rate their anxiety levels while taking exams and performing math；they also described any physical symptoms of stress they experienced during test taking.
According to co-author Associate Professor of Health Education Richard Harvey， slumping over is a defensive posture that can cause old negative memories in the body and brain. While the students without math anxiety did not report as great a benefit from better posture, they did find that doing math while slumping over was somewhat more difficult.“You have a choice,”said Peper. “It’s about using an upright(垂直的) position to improve your focus.”
That upright position could be particularly helpful o students facing the challenge called“stereotype（陈规旧习的）threat”, said Lauren Mason, one of the paper 's authors and a recent SF State graduate. Mason said she has benefited personally from using a more upright posture before taking difficult tests, including math. She believes that adopting a more confident posture could help other first-generation students as well as women entering science and math, who often battle stereotype threat, too.
Mason said the study results prove a simple way to improve many aspects of life, especially when stress is involved, "The way we carry ourselves and interact in space influences not only how others think of us but also how we think of ourselves.”
Peper and Harvey say these findings about body position can help people prepare for many different types of performance under stress, not just math tests Athletes, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture before and during their performance.

Early childhood is the best possible time to learn a second language. Children who experience two languages from birth typically become native speakers of both. But the question remains: Is it confusing for babies to learn two languages at the same time?
My partners and I recently studied the brain processing of language sounds in 11-month-oldbabies from monolingual(English only) and bilingual (Spanish-English)homes. We found some key differences between babies raised in monolingual versus bilingual homes. At 11 months of age, just before most babies begin to say their first words, the brain recordings showed that: Babies from monolingual English households are specialized to process(处理)the sounds of English, and not the sounds of Spanish, an unfamiliar language. Babies from bilingual Spanish-English households are specialized to process the sounds of both languages, Spanish and English.
Our findings show that babies'brains become sensitive to whatever language or languages they hear from their caregivers. A monolingual brain becomes sensitive to the sounds of one language, and a
bilingual brain becomes sensitive to the sounds of two languages. By 11 months of age,the activity in the baby brain reflects the language or languages that they have been exposed to.
It is now understood that the constant need to shift(转移)attention between languages leads to several cognitive(认知的) advantages. Research has found that bilingual adults and children show an improved executive functioning of the brain that is, they are able to shift attention, switch between tasks and solve problems more easily. There is evidence that being bilingual makes the learning of a third language easier. Further, the effects of two-language experience are thought to translate into protective effects against cognitive decline with aging and the attack of Alzheimer’s disease.
So, if you want your child to know more than one language, it's best to start at an early age, before they even start speaking their first language. It won't confuse your child, and it could even help him/her improve other forms of cognition.
