My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship (奖学金) to a
private school. It’s only a small discount (折扣), but the scholarship means she’ll
skip the waiting list – provided my husband and I can cover $20,000 a year.
Should we pay the private school fees, or choose free education instead?
I always assumed my children would go to a private school, like I did. Not because
my family is wealthy, but because I believe that the best education is private.
It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary school.
They’ll go to a private high school, I told myself. Yet here we are. My eldest is
now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will struggle to
afford private school.
If we’re to send our girl to private school, I could increase my work hours. My
law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a solid income, but
that’s not quite how it turned out.
The guilt and expectations are mine alone. I’m terrified that my daughter’s
potential will be wasted at the public school. And yet, I know that working more
hours will crush (压垮) me.
During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the
best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can’t sacrifice everything for
my precious girl. I explain that I want to be a positive role model for my daughter,
and an unhappy parent is a terrible strain on a family. I point out that not even the
privilege of private school will protect my children from disappointment or
struggle.
And finally, it’s decided. My daughter is going to the public school behind our
home. She couldn’t be more pleased.
It’s taken me a little longer, but now I’m content. More than my fancy private
school education, it’s my family that shaped me. With high school now 25 years
in the past, I can no longer remember the mathematical problems and

Small talk – the likes of “What do you have there? Popcorn?” or “The weather
today is beautiful, isn’t it?” – is meaningless and a waste of time, according to
some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may
appear to be.
One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to
the stranger sitting beside you can be scary, because you know the conversation is
sure to be awkward. But a study by the University of Chicago in the US found that
people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or
occupy themselves with their phones.
In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start
conversations with fellow travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because
they expected not to get a friendly answer. But the result turned out to be just the
opposite – most strangers were not only willing to be talked to, but also pleasant
to talk to.
“Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the lead researchers,
told Live Science. “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they’d
like to get to know you.”
Apart from making you happier, small talk with strangers can also help you feel
connected to your surroundings. Previous studies found that when people are
frequently smiled at, made eye contact with and spoken to at coffee shops, they
tend to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being
ignored and left out.
And if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you
should try to develop it into something “bigger”.
A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you
even more happiness than small talk. Participants in the study – 79 college
students – reported after the four-day experiment that they were much happier
when they had a third as much small talk and twice as many in-depth
conversations.
But deep conversations can start with small talk, can’t they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an
opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation
in which you learn something new from a stranger.

Antarctica is known for being a vast land of ice and snow, a place too cold for
most life. Despite this, the continent is slowly starting to turn warm. According to
the Guardian, the Antarctic has registered (登记) a new high temperature for the
first time on record, prompting fears of climate instability in the world’s iciest
place.
On Feb 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75
C on the icy continent of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the
previous record of 19.8 C, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading was taken at a monitoring station in the northern
part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian soil scientist Carlos Schaefer, the
temperature was documented during a 20-year-long research project. The focus
of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永久
冻土) within the region. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen for at least two years. Although this is a record high for Antarctica, Schaefer stressed that “We can’t
use this to anticipate climatic changes in the future. It’s simply a signal that
something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was in the 19 C range. These higher
temperatures can cause ice and glaciers (冰川) in Antarctic regions to melt. The
Antarctic peninsula (半岛) – the long finger of land that stretches toward Argentina
– is most dramatically affected. Scientists saw glaciers that have retreated by more
than 100 meters in Discovery Bay where the snow melted in little more than a
week, leaving dark exposed rock. This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that
can threaten the safety of coastal areas. It’s believed to be behind an alarming
decline of more than 50 percent in chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) colonies, which
are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and
worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet.
